Sunday, 17 January 2016 – MAF Test

MAF Test. Converted everything to statute measurements instead of metric to make it easy for coach to gauge my progress.

Warm up of 3 miles followed by a 5 mile MAF test and a cool down walk home afterwards. Not used to having such a long warm up: 3 miles/5k. I think that contributed to such a slow pace at the tail end of the MAF test.

Starting I was glad to see about 10:00min/mi or 6:00min/km pace, but it quickly deteriorated after the first mile. The sun finally shot it’s rays through the morning mist and I could feel the heat — but it did not bother me.

Come last mile, I had to walk to get my HR below 140. The threshold between sub-MAF and above MAF disappeared between walking and jogging. All I could do was to walk to get my HR down from 143+ to down to 135, then jogging again would shoot the HR back up above 140, then walk again to bring it back down. There is no jogging pace to keep my HR at MAF.

Average 11:43 min/mi pace for this test. Ok, I accept it. That’s the benchmark for the future.

It looks like heat is more a factor in my MAF pace than anything else? What should I do? Run MAF in the heat?
