Tuesday, 05 January 2016 – 1,000 Step Climb

On the way to Mount Popa, we witness a noviciation procession. In Myanmar, it is an honor for families to send their children around age 10 to a monastery for a week of Buddhist instruction. Before the children enter, they are paraded in full regala, donning ancient Myanmar fashion and wearing all the jewelry they have. Expense is not spared for the procession, with many families saving up for this day since the birth day of their child.

Later in the day, I climbed 1,000 steps to top of Mount Popa with Alix on my back. Straight back, focus on the glutes, and the climb was quite effortless. Barely broke a sweat, but I could feel the strain on my hips — exactly where I want to feel it. Alix’s weight was concentrated on my hips, so I was not surprised to feel it there. At the top, I was fine. Strong.
