Tuesday, 02 February 2016 – Rest Day

Aligned with coach’s training philosophy, today is a rest day. I’m not supposed to over-tire myself so I can train well another day.

I’m expecting my LF/HF ratio to rise this week, but I’m having doubts the readings are accurate. I’m getting more sleep that usual this week to enable more recovery, but that has been met with more a more stiff back in the mornings. After about 7 hours of sleep, if I get any more than that, my back starts to stiffen. It’s like my body is ready to wake up so I can’t completely relax in bed. Perhaps my cortisol is shooting up in the morning to get me awake.

That said, the LF/HR readings I take in the mornings may not be accurate because I’m bothered by the stiff back, thereby jacking up the LF/sympathetic reading. It feels better when I sit up, but is that the way to take proper readings?

I have paid attention enough to my body to know when my sympathetic system is high, and it does feel high right out of bed. Is it a factor of not getting a good sleep? Who knows. But as the morning progresses and I ease into my morning routine of brushing my teeth and getting ready to send my kids to school and commute to the office, I can steadily feel the fight or flight feeling gradually diminish — usually with my coffee. Hmm, coffee withdrawl? I do make sure I don’t drink coffee after 3PM, so…
